Not All Superheros Wear a Cape!

It wasn’t Superman or Wonder Woman, but a Port Hedland childcare facility was visited by a bunch of real-life heroes last week.

The visits were part of the centre’s Not All Superheroes Wear a Cape Day, which celebrated the work of local emergency personnel.

Centre director Sarah Webster said the idea for the day came about after educators at the centre had observed children dressing up as superheroes and emergency staff. She said many also aspired to be “just like Mum and Dad”.

“We asked the children what they wanted to be when they grow up and over 50 per cent answered superheroes such as police, fire and ambulance workers, as well as Superman and the Hulk, ” she said.

Ms Webster said the centre’s approach to learning was to incorporate the framework of belonging, being and becoming.

She said the visit explored these concepts and extended on the interests of the children while also celebrating the community spirit of Port Hedland. The children had the chance to check out the inside of an ambulance and a police car, while a few were a little scared by the police siren.
